Lawyers for a lobby group have told a Sydney court the federal Environment Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, did not properly consider the impact of the Anvil Hill coal mine in the upper Hunter Valley.
The New South Wales Government approved the open-cut coal mine with more than 80 conditions earlier this year.
The project, west of Muswellbrook, had also been referred to the Federal Government to consider the impacts of the mine.
The Federal Court has begun hearing a case brought by the Anvil Hill Project Watch Association under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
The association is arguing Mr Turnbull failed to properly consider the mine's impact on climate change and a threatened ecological community in the area, the Box Gum Grassy Woodland.
It is seeking a court order for the Minister to further consider the impacts of the mine.
The hearing continues.
